On track for a better rail service by Christmas

IMPROVED rail links between Dunbar and Edinburgh could be secured within months if a consultation study gives the green light.

Earlier this month Transport Scotlans began a six-week study examining the possible introduction of a 22.50pm late night train from the Capital as well as an additional early morning 6.30am service from Dunbar to Edinburgh.

On the back of Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson’s visit to Dunbar and the defunct East Linton train station, expectations are high that enhanced rail links are just around the corner.

Transport spokesman, Concillor Paul McLennan said he was “very positive” about the future of Dunbar’s rail services.

“We have taken major steps forward and we have never been at this stage before,” he said. “Best case scenario we could see an additional early morning and late evening service between Edinburgh and Dunbar running six days a week by December,” he added.

He was hopeful an hourly rail service by December 2009.

With a similar commuting population equal to that of North Berwick, an hourly service from Dunbar (AND East Linton) to Edinburgh is long overdue, giving a possible half-hourly service selected stations (Drem, Longniddry, Prestonpans, Wallyford or Musselburgh)!
