History trails for tourists

FIVE tourist trails have been launched in Prestonpans to help visitors discover the town’s rich and colourful history.

The Prestonpans Experience explores different periods and subjects, explaining their significance in the development of the town and their impact on its residents.

Public art and community murals which highlight major figures and events which helped shaped the town’s history, are a major feature of the trails.

Andrew Crummy, convenor of the Prestoungrange Arts Council and chairman of the Three Harbours Arts Festival, is a guide on the trails and has been involved in the project’s development.

He said: “It has taken a few years to get to this point but it is really exciting.

“We have had a range of people coming through and we are trying to expand and move it on to the next stage.

“We are trying to make it more focused, trying to respond to demand, whilst building up on the number of people visiting.”

The five trail experiences include Arts and Architecture, Industrial Heritage, Community, and Witches – which gives a glimpse into the lives of 81 men, women and children accused of practising witchcraft in the 16 and 17th century.

For visitors who missed the battle re-enactment celebrations in Prestonpans last weekend, the Battle of Prestonpans Experience takes them on a journey back in time to when Bonnie Prince Charlie led an army of Highlanders to victory in 1745.

Tours can last from 45 minutes to two hours and cost from £12.95 per person, including light refreshments at the Prestoungrange Gothenburg.
