Apple-d at theft as community orchard provides rich pickings
EAST Linton Horticultural Society’s plan to harvest apples with local youngsters, at the village’s Heritage Orchard, have come a cropper – after sticky-fingered thieves beat them to it!
Society members had planned to harvest the orchard, in Preston Road, with youngsters from the East Linton Beavers group. However, they were dismayed to find that the 34 apples in the orchard, counted at the end of August, had been picked during a routine check.
Society president David Affleck said: “This is the first time since the orchard was planted that we have had this problem.
“The Beavers had worked hard earlier in the year looking after the trees and it is very disappointing to find that someone appears to have helped themselves to the crop.
“We had also been looking at having a display of East Linton-grown apples and promoting this Heritage Orchard project at a major apple day event in Angus.”
