Thumbs up from locals for surgery changes

PROPOSALS to lower patient numbers at over-burdened Tranent Medical Practice received a thumbs-up from community leaders this week.

As previously reported in the Courier, doctors at Tranent Medical Practice – which currently provides medical care for an estimated 15,000 patients living in the Fa’side area – wish to see a permanent, full-time health centre created in nearby Ormiston.

At present, two facilities in Tranent and Ormiston serve Fa’side residents, with Ormiston acting as a smaller ‘branch surgery’ to Tranent.

Under doctors’ proposals, which could be in place by next April, the 3,000 or so patients who are on the register from Ormiston and Pencaitland will be exclusively served by an independent Ormiston practice.

Representatives from Tranent, Ormiston, Pencaitland and Macmerry community councils, as well as the four Fa’side councillors, met in Tranent Day Centre on Tuesday evening to discuss the plans.

Clinical director for East Lothian Community Health Partnership, Dr Ian Johnston, was also present.

Tranent Community Council chairman Raymond Strang told the Courier: “It was well-attended by community councillors and there were some good discussions and balanced opinions put across.

“The general consensus of the group was that the proposal was acceptable and we will be writing to the health board to offer support to the plans.”

NHS Lothian will redefine the boundaries of Tranent Medical Practice and it’s understood that two new GPs and administrative staff will be appointed to run the Ormiston Practice.

great news for ormiston and pencaitland, however the demands on the tranent medical practice will continue to be acute as the projected population will increase especially within the elderly, therefore it is important that way forward has to be a new multi purpose facilty to meet the needs of the 21st century
