May the post be with you
AFTER serving her community as postmistress for more than 30 years, Drem grandmother May Fairbairn is looking forward to a well-deserved rest – and her first proper holiday in years!
May, 76, was presented with a long-service award last Tuesday by Post Office representative Alicia Hassam, to mark her years of dedication to Drem’s postal services.
“I’m honoured to have received this award in recognition of my 30 years service in Drem Post Office, especially as the branch is under public consultation at the moment,” said May, who has two grown-up daughters, Anne and Fiona.
“I have enjoyed serving the community and have always valued my customers and never found it an effort to greet them with a smile.
“Though I will be staying in Drem when I retire, I think the few customers that I have now will miss me serving them in the post office.”
May, whose husband Duncan passed away eight years ago, has lived in Drem since 1954.
Though fond of the village and its residents, she is looking forward to enjoying a break when she retires from her post in mid-November.
“The first thing I’m definitely going to do is have a long holiday,” said May, who also volunteers at Roodlands Hospital in Haddington and helps out at her daughter Anne’s Appin Equestrian Centre, Drem.
“I’m originally from the Orkney Islands so I think a nice long stay there would be lovely.”
As part of Post Office Ltd’s Network Change programme, Drem is one of four county villages that is earmarked to have a reduced postal service installed in mid-November.
A weekly two-hour service is scheduled to commence pending six-weeks of public consultation, which began on August 18.
Ms Hassam said: “The service that Mrs Fairbairn has given to the post offuce for over 30 years in truly outstanding.
“On behalf of Post Office Ltd and all the community, I would like to thank her for all her hard work and effort.
“Despite the fact that we are having to close post offices because of falling customer numbers, it is still important that we recognise the work of individuals.”
