War of words over bus stop

THE war of words between Tranent’s community council and the chair of a local residents’ group looks set to rumble on.

Hostilities between Muirpark Tenants and Residents Association (MTRA) and Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council have been escalating since the former launched a campaign to relocate a bus stop in Muirpark estate – considered by some residents as a hotspot for anti-social behaviour and loitering youths.

Community councillors approached East Lothian Council after expressing concern that they’d not been consulted on the plans, which many felt were outwith MTRA’s remit.

Further animosity was sparked between the two groups when a letter from association chairwoman Karen Carr, defending the group’s actions, was read out at a recent community council meeting and described as “confusing” by members.

In response, Ms Carr slammed the community council for its “shocking” conduct.

“I was very disappointed that the community council didn’t bother to contact me and come forward to arrange a meeting rather than airing this letter in public and to the press,” she told the Courier.

“The letter was quite clear and written in English so I don’t know how they can claim it was confusing.”

Community council chairman Raymond Strang explained: “The letter we received, which was read by former group secretary Robert McNeill, contained a number of inaccurate points.

“When the community council reconvenes in September we will draft a formal reply.

“However, if Ms Carr feels so strongly about having not received a response perhaps she should contact the community council directly.”

A recent survey carried out by members of the council’s anti-social behaviour team, and completed by about 12 residents, showed overwhelming support for the relocation of the bus stop, said Karen.

An East Lothian Council spokeswoman said: “Any decision taken with regard to the bus stop in Muirpark estate would be discussed at community council level.”
