Diamond duo celebrations
Elizabeth and James Penman marked 60 years of married bliss on Sunday with a family party at their home on Sainthill Court.
The loving couple, originally from Edinburgh, met at North Merchiston Boys and Girls Youth Club in 1940, when Jim was 15 and Betty 13.
“Our first date was a visit to the old Regal Picture House on the corner of Lothian Road and Morrison Street,” recalled Betty. “I can’t remember what the film was, but we had to stand for ages outside in a very long queue.”
After an eight-year courtship, they married at the then Tollcross Central Hall on August 20, 1948, and set up home in the capital.
Jim was a stonemason to trade, while Betty was a personnel officer for a city bakery.
They moved to North Berwick in 1978 following their retirements, and the diamond wedding couple admit it was one of the best decisions they have ever made.
“We have both kept reasonable healthy and I am in no doubt that the clean sea air of North Berwick is responsible for that,” Betty said.
“We have always loved the town. We used to come down for days out before we got married.
“There is nothing better than to take a stroll along the beach if it is a nice day.”
She added: “I think the secret to our long marriage is that we always try to get on with each other.
“We have a few shared interests and that’s important in any relationship.”
Their son Bruce, 55, stays nearby in Fidra Road with their daughter-in-law Sally, 48, and grandchildren Gregor, 12, Bobby, 10, and Alison, eight.
