Tenants win long battle for CCTV
RESIDENTS of Muirpark were jubilant this week at news of victory in their two-year campaign for CCTV.
And it seems likely that street cameras will be installed within days.
It’s understood that anti-social behaviour on the estate has also lessened in recent months, following the launch of a ‘problem-solving partnership’ between the council’s anti-social behaviour (ASB) team and Lothian and Borders Police, in March.
During the past five months ASB officers, outreach workers and local police officers have been conducting regular joint patrols of the area – which residents previously complained were a ‘hotbed’ for disturbances and unruly behaviour by youths.
A council spokeswoman said: “While we’re aware that groups of young people do congregate in that area, over the last couple of months incidents of anti-social behaviour have actually reduced.
“We have also been acting on feedback from residents in the Muirpark area to ensure the situation is continuously monitored.”
She explained that CCTV cameras would soon be erected at the junction of Ormiston Road and Muirpark.
And she added: “The CCTV will allow us to continue to monitor the area and any potential for anti-social behaviour.”
Muirpark Tenants and Residents’ Association chairwoman Karen Carr, who led the CCTV campaign said: “I’m absolutely delighted that CCTV’s going to be installed as it’s been a long hard slog.
“I would agree that there has been a decline in anti-social behaviour in general.”
