Friends of Cuthill dealt funding blow

FRIENDS of Cuthill Park, Prestonpans, were dealt a devastating blow at their meeting in the town’s Labour Club, when it was revealed that the budget to revamp the area would be cut by £200,000.

Friends member Wattie Anderson said that the bombshell news was delivered as members met to discuss park improvements.

They were told that the budget earmarked for the upgrade would be cut from £300,000 to £100,000 and this would have a major impact on their plans, he said.

After a long campaign to upgrade the area, residents were finally able to view plans for its redevelopment at the meeting.

They welcomed the news that housing developer Barratt Homes had confirmed that it would take responsibility for lowering the wall surrounding the park.

This had been a major issue of concern for the campaigners.

Maree Johnston from East Lothian Council’s landscape and countryside division brought plans to show residents how the park might be developed.

She said: “It is still a live project and it will be a package put together by various sources of funding, which is still available out there.

“We were happy to hear that people are still behind the project and still want the same kind of improvements from the last meeting.”

In September, a meeting will be held in Cuthill park and a walk taken around the site in order to identify areas where improvements are needed.
