Don't clamp hotel expansion, says owner
THE owner of a town centre hotel has defended his plans to build a new accommodation block where parking bays are currently located.
Stirling Stewart’s proposals for adding two self-contained units containing seven bedrooms at the back of the Harbour House Hotel, Quality Street, North Berwick, have come under fire from nearby residents.
They claim the project will result in five of the parking spaces allocated to the hotel at the Imperial car park being lost, increasing the intensity of competition for overnight parking.
Mr Stewart, whose business interests also include the Nether Abbey Hotel, admits that parking is a problem in the town centre. But he insists the benefits to the local economy of providing more bedrooms for tourists makes his case a strong one.
He said: "I feel that the economic benefit to North Berwick of providing additional visitor accommodation outweighs the parking concerns that has been raised, and I would hope that the planning committee decision will reflect that."
