A dark Christmas in Dunbar this year?

RED tape is threatening to cast a long shadow over Dunbar’s Christmas lights display.

Graeme Darkes, chairman of Dunbar Christmas Lights Committee, informed community councillors that due to changes in health and safety regulations, certain features of the town’s display would not be possible this year.

The new regulations include a ban on displays higher than three metres from the ground, and the use of lightbulbs with a capacity higher than 110V.

Mr Darkes said: “These restrictions mean that it is very unlikely that the large Christmas lights outside the Abbey Church and the Town House will be possible.

“The nativity scene will not be on display this year and there’s a question mark over lights being placed immediately over shop windows.”

Lights on the town centre Christmas tree and the traditional strings of lights that hang throughout High Street are also at risk.

“Providing we are granted a licence from the council, there will be a reduced lights display this year,” said Mr Darkes.

Community council chairman Stephen Bunyan described the situation facing committee members this year as “extremely grave”.

Community councillor Kilvert Croft added: “If we have any lights at Christmas, we will be extremely grateful under the circumstances.”

Members agreed to assist the committee to formulate an action plan before submitting their licence application to the local authority.
