EAST Linton Horticultural Society is to appeal to the village’s community council to assist in preventing a memorial dedicated to famous engineer John Rennie falling further into disrepair.

While preparing for the visit of Beautiful Scotland judges – which took place last Monday – society members noted that the John Rennie Memorial, located in Dunbar Road, was cracked, covered in leaves, and that seating at the site was in need of repair.

Society president David Affleck said: “It is not something that is in keeping with his life as a noted civil engineer.

“The present site was given a clean but it is perhaps something worth raising with Dunpender Community Council.”

John Rennie – famous for his work on canals, aquaducts and bridges _ was born at Phantassie, near East Linton, in 1761 and died 60 years later.

Despite the poor appearance of the memorial, members of the horticultural society are confident that the village impressed the Beautiful Scotland judges.

“A special thanks is due to the traders and residents whose efforts made East Linton look welcome and attractive on judging day,” added Mr Affleck.
