no fun and games when it comes to litter

NORTH BERWICK community leaders are urging residents to get tough on litter this weekend, as the countdown continues to Monday’s visit by the Britain In Bloom judges.

The town is competing against Herm, St Brelade, Whitehead and Cemaes Bay in the final of the small coastal resort category.

But with up to 20,000 people expected to attend the North Berwick Highland Games tomorrow (Saturday), the pressure to keep local streets and public parks clean has never been greater.

Elma Danks, treasurer of North Berwick In Bloom, said: “It’s certainly not ideal having the judges come less than 48 hours after the games have ended, so we would appreciate it if residents would help by picking up any litter they may see lying about, especially on Monday morning.

The expert judges who hold North Berwick’s fate in their hands are Roger Burnett, parks and countryside manager for Scarborough Council, and Rae Beckwith, area manager for Gateshead Council.

They will spend three hours touring North Berwick on Monday afternoon.

Mr Burnett, who chairs the 14-man national judging team, said, “We will be looking for excellence in floral and permanent planting, how issues surrounding conservation and recycling are being addressed, together with environmental quality.”

The judges will also want to know how Britain in Bloom is being promoted at a local level and meeting this year’s theme of Local Roots.

Results will be announced at the national awards ceremony in Chester on September 24.
