A DRIVER and passenger were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with back and neck injuries after their vehicle overturned at a Dunbar roundabout and careered into a lamp post at 11.30pm on Saturday.

The male driver and female passenger, were pulled from the toppled LandRover by other motorists at the scene.

A fire service spokesman said that lighting at that section of the A1 had been switched off at the time.

Both casualties – from Chirnside in the Borders – were treated at the scene by Dunbar and East Linton fire crews who applied neck braces prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

Crew manager at Dunbar Fire Station, John Hannan, said the couple had been heading south towards Berwick when their vehicle struck the edge of Spott Road roundabout, rolled over several times and ploughed into a lamppost.

The lamppost, in a hazardous condition, was removed by the highways department.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old Dunbar motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a serious arm injury last Wednesday after his Yamaha was in collision with an oncoming car.

The accident happened at 9pm on Belhaven Road – 500 metres north of the junction with the A1 – and police closed the carriageway for one hour and 40 minutes while the wreckage was cleared.
