Better disabled access delayed

PLANS to install better disabled access at Dunbar’s Hallhill Healthy Living Centre are behind schedule.

New automatic doors were to be fitted at the entrance to the Kellie Road centre, to assist disabled visitors and wheelchair users with entering the facility, following a £10,000 grant from Forward Scotland’s Viridor Credits programme.

However, at a recent meeting of Dunbar Community Council, local councillor Norman Hampshire said that “issues” with the company originally contracted to carry out the installation had led to the work being delayed.

He later told the Courier: “We don’t have an exact date for the installation. The work needs to be completed within one day to ensure access to the building is not compromised.

“East Lothian Council’s architect and the installers are in the process of getting a programme of works sorted so we can fit that in. I’d hope that it’s going to be completed by the end of August.”

Centre manager Bobby Peters explained: “There’s no problem with disabled access to the building apart from the swing doors which are too heavy for people in wheelchairs to use easily.”
