THE youngest member of Tranent Rotary Club has been elected to the “esteemed” position of club president for the coming year.

Richard Miller, 46, has been a member of the Tranent club for the past seven years, and was elected as president by fellow members last month, after serving as vice-president during the 2007/08 season.

Richard, who describes himself as “an Englishman abroad”, was born in Corbridge, Northumberland and spent his schooldays in Yorkshire before arriving in Scotland in 1984.

Although living in Longniddry, with wife Susie and two sons Andrew, 13, and Alastair, 12, Richard opted to join Tranent’s rotary club rather than the village branch, after being invited along to a few club meetings by Tranent rotarians.

“I thought they were a really good group of people,” he explained.

“Some people see rotary clubs as a bunch of old fuddy-duddies but in reality there is a whole lot more to it than that.”

He continued: “I may not be a Tranent man but there’s a lot of responsibility involved in being president, which is an esteemed position.

“And I am looking forward to doing my best in the coming year.”

He also paid tribute to 2007/08 president Kenneth Manson for his “help and advice” in recent months.

As part of their extensive fundraising programme, which benefits a number of local and international projects, members are preparing to hold a race night on November 14.
