Paving the way for £1.2 million dental practice

WORK has begun to clear the site for a £1.2 million state-of-the-art NHS dental surgery in Prestonpans.

The new surgery, replacing Price and Crummey’s current practice at 97 High Street, will go on land at 43 High Street, formerly used as a builder’s yard by Robert Rollo and Sons.

The building company is joint applicant in the project for the new practice and 16 flats – approved by East Lothian Council in June.

Practice owner Dr Chris Price has been meeting architects and builders this week, to tweak the final plans.

He said: “The additional six dentists and a new total of 10 surgeries will definitely benefit the community.

“We hope to register an additional 10,000 patients in East Lothian by achieving what we have planned.

“We look to fulfil the NHS dental need for the county.

“And meetings will continue to ensure the plans are followed through.”

Currently the practice has three surgeries with four dentists, but the new building will accommodate 10 surgeries and 10 dentists.

The new facilities will also allow the practice to double the annual training of NHS dentists to two a year.

And it aims to retain the services of the graduates it trains instead of freeing them after their 12-month contracts expire.

Access problems for patients, limited space and expansion restrictions sparked the idea to build another surgery.

And now the new surgery will enable the dentists to cope with increased demand.

Dr Price predicts that their current premises at 97 High Street will be let out to another company after the move, which is planned for summer 2009.
