Campaign to stop open cast mining

ORMISTON Community Council has pledged to fight plans for an open cast mining site close to the East Lothian border.

The proposals for an open cast mining site at Airfield Farm, near Cousland, Midlothian were displayed to the public on June 19.

On hearing of the plans, community councillors voiced concerns that the development of a mining site could “spill over” into the county and bring unwanted noise, dust and dirt to the village and surrounding areas.

A spokesperson said: “We have already fought several battles to stop opencast mining in areas surrounding the village and it was the feeling of the community council that we need to give our outmost support to fight against this one.”

Another public meeting is planned at Cousland Village Hall on August 28 at 7.30pm, to discuss the proposals.
