A ‘FORGOTTEN hero’ of the First World War will be honoured with a place on Tranent’s war memorial, in a special ceremony next week.

Private Robert Kilgour (pictured) died aged 24 in the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. And all are welcome to attend the dedication to him, at 3pm on Thursday, at the Winton Place memorial.

The event takes place on the 91st anniversary of Private Kilgour’s death. The Scots Guardsman was born in Tranent’s Station Cottage, Elphinstone Road.

Tranent Community council chairman Raymond Strang said that members were “privileged to be hosting this reception to honour one of Tranent’s brave sons.”

A specially cast bronze plaque bearing his name will be attached to the sandstone memorial, joining the list of 98 local men who fell in the First World War and 39 others who lost their lives in the Second World War.

Among those attending the ceremony will be Private Kilgour’s closest living relatives, niece Agnes Grant and nephew Robert Kilgour, who are both in their 80’s.
