Council: 'We'll defend East Lothian's post offices'
THE views of all community councils in the county are being sought by East Lothian Council as part of a submission to the Post Office regarding the long-term future of local post offices.
The council’s chief executive, Alan Blackie, council leader David Berry, depute leader Stuart Currie, Provost Sheena Richardson and Paul McLennan, cabinet member for the environment, recently met senior representatives of Post Office Ltd to discuss the local network of offices in the county.
The council also sought details of the criteria which the Post Office uses to assess its ‘Network Change Programme’ which has led in many parts of the country to reduced or closed Post Office services.
It's rumoured that county post offices in Aberlady, Dirleton, Drem, Elphinstone, Garvald, Gifford and Ormiston could be earmarked for closure.
Depute council leader, Councillor Stuart Currie, said: “The council believes strongly that a vibrant Post Office network across East Lothian enhances local community life.
"We are working in partnership with community councils to defend our post offices and hopefully minimise any closures that may be planned for the county.
"We are currently preparing our submission to the Post Office and collating views expressed by community councils. I urge local residents to make sure their voices are heard by contacting either their local East Lothian Councillor or community council to pass on their concerns.”
