INCONSIDERATE cyclists who ride on town centre pavements are creating a serious safety hazard, according to members of North Berwick Community Council.

Members are concerned by reports that increasing numbers of cyclists are using the town’s narrow pavements – to the obvious danger of pedestrians.

Secretary Kathryn Smith said: “I have raised this matter with the community policeman. I recently encountered two youths, teenagers, cycling on the pavements in the High Street. “When I challenged them, one of them sped off while the other swore at me. I want to know what the legal position is. There is also a problem with adults riding on pavements.”

Treasurer Elma Danks added: “I have seen adults riding on the pavement in Westgate.”

Community councillor Ian Watson pointed out that cyclists were often seen going against the traffic flow in the town centre’s one-way system.
