Duke hosts Wheels of Yesteryear

ALL roads lead to Lennoxlove House next weekend, as the historic country seat of the Dukes of Hamilton hosts the finale of one of the UK’s biggest vintage car rallies.

The ‘Wheels of Yesteryear’ road run, organised by the Scottish Association of Vehicle Enthusiasts, will see more than 80 classic motorcycles and lorries arrive in convoy at the stately home south of Haddington from around 1pm next Sunday (July 20), to be met by the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton.

The event, which begins at 10am at the Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange, features a 1924 Galloway and a 1937 Leyland Hippo, as well as motorcycles, lorries, buses and military vehicles.

They will make the journey to Lennoxlove via Heriot, Gilston, Humbie, stopping at Glenkinchie, then on to West Saltoun, East Saltoun, Gifford and Garvald before arriving in Haddington.

The lorries will go via Dalkeith, Wallyford, Longniddry to Prestongrange Mining Museum, then via Tranent and the old A1 to Haddington.

This special event at Lennoxlove House is free to spectators and will also feature local craft and trade stalls.

Kenneth Buchanan, Lennoxlove general manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome Wheels of Yesteryear to Lennoxlove House. As a former RAF test pilot and a collector of motorcycles, the Duke of Hamilton has a real passion for classic modes of transport, so hosting the event at his former home is a very special privilege and one that everyone enjoys.

“It is also a great opportunity for the public to come to Lennoxlove House and enjoy a great day out.

"This is the third Wheels of Yesteryear event we have hosted and it always draws hundreds of picnickers looking for something different.”
