A healthy upgrade

IMPROVED health care facilities in Haddington have taken a step closer to reality with the formal lodging of plans for a £120,000 extension to busy Newton Port Surgery.

NHS Lothian has allocated the sum to provide an additional four consulting rooms at the town’s only GP surgery, which is coming under increasing pressure due to a growth in the local population.

Three different practices are based within the surgery building and shortage of space is increasingly becoming a factor.

At present, the surgery has a total of 18 consulting rooms, but development applicant Lynn Cunningham says that would not be sufficient to meet antipated future medical demands.

The proposed four new consulting rooms – to be shared by the three resident practices – will be contained in a large single-storey portable cabin structure, with 71.5 square metres of floorspace.

There would be direct access from the existing building to the extension.

Anyone wishing to make representations to the council has until July 25 to do so, in writing, to: Peter Collins, Environment Director, East Lothian Council, John Muir House, Brewery Park, Haddington.
