'Honoured' to be new Rotary president
COUNCILLOR John Caldwell marked his fifth year as a member of Musselburgh Rotary Club by being inaugurated as branch president last Monday.
The Musselburgh East and Carberry councillor said he was “honoured” to assume the presidency and vowed to continue the good work of departing president Matthew Jones.
”I am privileged to lead such a prestigious bunch of people,” he said.
“It’s a lot of commitment but before I take any position I make sure I have time to do it.”
At the Quay restaurant, Mr Jones, presented Mr Caldwell with the chain of office (see picture left), while the new president thanked Mr Jones for his efforts over the last year.
He then addressed the club as the new Rotary President and promised to maintain the Rotary standards set by preceding presidents.
The new president’s duties will include chairing Monday night meetings, attending a host of formal events and continuing fundraising efforts.
Mr Jones, 41 – who has now taken up the post of public relations manager for the branch – reflected on his tenure.
“It’s been a successful year. We have dished out over £8,000 to local and international charities and I have found the job very rewarding,” he said.
“But a low point was the passing of last year’s secretary Bill McKinley.’”
He added that Mr Caldwell’s achievements at community level and with the council would assist him in his new post.
