Piper Tegan on her Todd at top event
A MULTI-TALENTED Tranent teenager is to take the ‘sound of Scotland’ south of the border next week – as the only Scottish school pupil taking part in a two-day celebration of young musicians.
Tegan Todd, 15, of West Windygoul Cottages, will join about 350 musicians for the ‘Excellent!’ concert in Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, and play the bagpipes to arriving visitors.
As the only piping student at the prestigious St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh, staff chose Tegan to represent Scotland at the exclusive event this Tuesday.
The dedicated teen, who also plays the saxophone and the violin, told the Courier: “I’m very excited and proud to be playing at the concert.
“It’s quite an honour to be the only Scottish student going and to be taking a Scottish instrument down there.”
Hundreds of people are expected to attend the event, to celebrate the success of the Department for Children, Schools and Families’ Music and Dance Scheme, which supports 1,600 musicians and dancers in England.
“I still get nervous about performing but I’ve got used to it,” said Tegan, a pipe major with North Berwick Junior Pipe Band.
Pipe Major Allen Angus, of North Berwick Pipe Band, praised Tegan’s progress since she began learning the bagpipes, aged seven, while living in England.
“Tegan started learning the pipes with the City of York Pipe Band and she came to us about four years ago as a good novice player,” he said.
“She has developed really well in that four years and is a very self-confident girl.”
He added “She’s clearly got a great future ahead of her.”
Tegan, who lives with parents Jennifer and Allan, will also be performing for audiences in East Lothian later this year as part of series of concerts organised by Haddington Concert Society.
