Slowing boy racers

THE days of ‘boy racers’ on Haddington’s Queen’s Avenue are numbered, after council transport chiefs agreed to install speed reduction measures.

Ward councillor Tom Trotter reported at a recent meeting of Haddington and District Community Council that the local authority was looking to bring in traffic calming to the street following pressure from residents and community councillors.

Meanwhile, the results of a police survey of traffic movements on nearby Haldane Avenue has revealed that only a small percentage of drivers break the 40 mph speed limit on the western approach road from the A1 turn-off.

The survey saw just 18 drivers charged with speeding from a total of 3,300 who used the road over a four-day period.

Community policeman, PC Stuart Gunn, said: “I was surprised by the volume of traffic there.

“A lot of cars use it because it is a convenient way of getting through Haddington,

“If you want to go from east to west it is far quicker than going through the town centre.”
