Head bids farewell
OUTGOING Loretto School headmaster, Michael Mavor, aims to tee-off his retirement with rounds of golf and foreign travel.
Last Friday, the 61-year-old English teacher concluded his seven year stint at the school he attended as a boy.
Of all his achievements, Mr Mavor ranked the establishment of a school golf academy in 2002 as his tour de force.
“The most exciting thing in my time here has been the golf academy,” he said.
“The idea struck me. that there was next to no golf here and I felt we had fertile ground already due to our proximity to the Links”
The married father-of-two soon teamed up with Craigielaw Golf Club, and advertised golf scholarships at Loretto.
Today, two German pupils represent their country, another five fly the flag for Scotland and many more pound the courses for the county.
In a remarkable career spanning almost four decades Mr Mavor has been at the helm of three secondary schools and a governor of ten.
Of the school he attended as man and boy, he said: “ Lorettonians are very direct, open and friendly. I have really enjoyed my time here.”
His succesor is Peter Hogan.
