IT PROMISES to be an unforgettable 12 months for Kayleigh McMillan following her investiture as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2008/09.

For 15-year-old Kayleigh, a sergeant in the Knox Academy Combined Cadet Force (CCF), it will mean rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous as the aide de camp of Sir Garth Morrison, the Queen’s official representative in East Lothian.

She is the first member of the local CCF, which this year celebrates its centenary, to be given the honour of assisting the Lord Lieutenant on his official duties.

Kayleigh, who stays in Knowesley Park, Haddington, joined the local CCF five years ago.

It will be a case of in at the deep end in her new role, as her first official engagement with Sir Garth will be the opening of Queen Margaret University by Her Majesty the Queen, next Friday (July 4). She has been given permission to break from the CCF’s annual camp at Barry Buddon near Carnoustie to attend the royal event.

Major George Macfarlane, Knox Academy CCF commanding officer, said: “Selecting Kayleigh from our unit was relatively straightforward. She has been the outstanding member of the Knox Academy CCF for the last two years.

“In addition, she came first in the national senior cadet instructor competition held at Garelochhead. I think she will make an ideal Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet.”
