Shona at the helm

AN ANCESTOR of one of Musselburgh’s prominent fishing families has been appointed development officer for the Fisherrow Trust.

Two generations of Shona McMillan’s family (nee Thorburn) were harbour masters at Fisherrow, while her great-grandmother also carried creel to shore from the boats.

The 43-year-old has been brought in to develop the Trust’s services while also increasing membership and funding at the Fisherrow Centre.

The Fisherrow Trust is the parent body of the Fisherrow Centre, which was set up to serve the needs of the community and is used by more than 1,200 people each week.

Until 2006, East Lothian Council met the cost of the centre’s overheads, which are now the responsibility of the Fisherrow Trust.

The Trust generates revenue by letting out office space in the centre to voluntary organisations.

Fisherrow Trust chairman, Keith Simpson said he expected the new development officer to be a “powerful voice” in the organisation, particularly due to her family ties to Fisherrow.

Shona McMillan said she was “delighted” to be able to contribute to the area which had been her “family home for generations.”
