Arson attack on youth base
POLICE are investigating a fireraising attack on a portable cabin – home to two local youth groups – in Tranent’s Winton Place.
Fire crews were called to the burning cabin, to the rear of Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School, at 5.10pm, on Saturday.
Those responsible did not gain access to the cabin, which is mounted on a brick platform, but started the fire underneath the structure, by removing bricks from the foundation.
Thanks to the quick action of firefighters from Musselburgh and Newcraighall, the cabin suffered only minor damage.
It is used on a weekly basis by the Tranent Children and Youth Project, which provides activities for schoolchildren during term time.
An East Lothian Council spokeswoman said: “Luckily, no equipment was destroyed and there remains only slight smoke damage to the walls.
“The two youth clubs who are based there will continue to use the building despite there being a slight smell of smoke, as there are only a couple of weeks left until the end of term.”
A police spokesman confirmed that the fire was deliberately set and urged anyone with information about the incident to come foward. “We appeal for anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious activity to contact Tranent Police Station on 01875 610333,” he said.
