POLICE confiscated nearly 40 litres of alcohol during a recent crackdown on underage drinkers in Tranent.

Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council heard that, on Saturday, May 17, officers had targeted ‘hotspots’ in the town, where youths were known to congregate during weekends.

The volume of alcohol confiscated from youngsters comprised approximately, 30 litres of lager, three litres of cider, two litres worth of alcopops and nearly three litres of wine.

PC James McLeod added that the initiative had led to a “dramatic reduction” in the number of phone calls made to police throughout the weekend, relating to youths misbehaving in the town.

“I would like to once again remind residents that there will be serious consequences for anyone caught buying alcohol for minors,” he said.

Community councillors were told that police and local authority had joined forces to curb underage drinking.

If police officers caught a child consuming alcohol, a warning letter was sent home to his or her parents, by East Lothian Council’s anti-social behaviour team and Lothian and Borders Police.
