Replacing a mile of water pipes
MORE than £250,000 is being invested by Scottish Water to improve drinking water quality in Pencaitland and New Winton.
Scottish Water has warned that New Winton residents are most likely to experience temporary interruptions to their water supply as part of the £264,000 upgrade, which is expected to take place over the next 10 weeks.
The system supplying New Winton and Pencaitland villagers has developed a “history of bursts and frustrating interruptions” in recent years, admitted a Scottish Water spokesman.
Project manager, Robin Gallacher, said: “We understand the frustration felt by customers in this part of East Lothian.
“When customers turn on their kitchen tap they expect a stream of clear, fresh drinking water at whatever time of day.
“Over the next 10 weeks my team will be replacing nearly a mile of ageing mains with new durable plastic pipes, better suited to meet the rigours of the modern day climate.”
He added that the more traditional ‘open-cut’ method would be used to update the system, whereby workers dig down to replace failing parts of the network section by section.
Residents would be given 48 hours notification before any interruption to the water supply, said a Scottish Water spokesman.
“We would advise customers to store tap water in clean and safe containers in their fridge ahead of any such event,” added the spokesman.
