Diamond jubilee gala fun
THE community spirit of the people of Cockenzie and Port Seton has ensured that tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) diamond jubilee gala day will be bigger and better than ever.
Excited gala committee chairperson Tracey Bellany spoke to the Courier before a busy programme of events kicked-off last Sunday with the family fun day at King George V Park and the annual football competition between Cockenzie and Port Seton.
She said: “The response by local people and businesses in helping us with this year’s gala day has been fantastic. The committee would like to thank everyone. We would also like to give a special mention to Andrew, Jack, Nicole, Liam, Abbie, Rebecca, Harvey and Emma – all children from Cockenzie Primary School who designed the 24 flags that will be flying in the village throughout the civic fortnight.”
Gala queen Caitlin McMillan and her escort Jordan will take centre stage tomorrow (Saturday) when their big day starts with the fancy dress competition at 11.30am.
There will be a reception of former gala day queens in the bowling club at noon, who will then join the gala procession in an open top bus.
Four lorries will travel in this year’s procession instead of the usual three, as the ‘Old Ship Inn’ is presenting a 1948 float in celebration of 60 years of the gala day.
The gala queen is due to arrive at Port Seton Centre at 12.30pm, before the procession departs for the green at 1pm and the laying of the wreath at the war memorial at 1.15pm. Children’s food bags will be handed out after the procession leaves the centre.
The procession will make its way to Cockenzie Harbour at 1.30pm, with the queen’s barge and the other boats due to set sail at 1.45pm.
The royal party is due to arrive at Port Seton Harbour at 2.15pm, and will make its way to King George V Park at 2.40pm, where the gala queen will be crowned at 3pm by celebrated food writer, Port Seton-raised Mary Contini.
A ceilidh will be held in the evening, and next Thursday and Friday, Cockenzie Drama Group will present its comedy, ‘Waiting for a Queen’.
It is a one-act play, written by the group’s director Jean Thomson, and will be a fun way to end a civic fortnight that will have been full of laughter and great memories for the people of Cockenzie and Port Seton.
