A SCHOOL that’s experienced tough times is determined to prove that its pupils receive a first-class education.

Whitecraig Primary School has been hosting open days with a difference – with parents observing real lessons, rather than just speaking to staff outwith normal teaching hours.

The village primary school has been progressing with an action plan after a report by HMIE inspectors last year said that the school was struggling to perform in several key areas.

Then, earlier this year, the community was rocked by the suspension of headteacher Mark Melville after he appeared in court in connection with child pornography allegations.

He is expected to appear in court again at a later date.

Parents visited the Whitecraig Crescent school on Monday and were allowed access to classrooms to see their children learning and interacting with teachers.

It was the second open day held at the school in the last fortnight – staff and pupils also welcomed visitors last Monday.

Acting headteacher Angus MacRury said: “We are actively encouraging the community to become part of the daily life of the school and we wish to show them that their children are receiving education of a very high standard.

“Feedback from the parents on the 19th (last Monday) was very positive.

“The P1/2 class was very popular, with parents commenting on how well the children were working and how well they behaved in class.”
