Pub couple fighting bid to replace them
LICENSEES of the Wemyss Hotel, which closed last week, have vowed to fight action by owners, Punch Taverns, to remove them.
Meanwhile, Punch this week stressed that it was “actively recruiting” their replacements.
Lisa Rowe, who has run the hotel with her husband Brian for the past seven years, said that they wanted to complete their 20-year lease. Punch was trying to remove them “ on a legal technicality”.
The closure had come only a fortnight before gala day.
“I don’t think they could have been more insensitive about the timing of this.
“We have always played a big part in gala day. It’s really sad. The Wemyss on gala day is always full of fun and music,” said Mrs Rowe.
A spokeswoman for Punch Taverns would not address the specific areas of conflict with the Rowes, but said: “Our main priority is to re-open The Wemyss Hotel as soon as possible. It is boarded up for security purposes.
“We are currently resolving a number of issues with the previous licensees.
“We are actively recruiting the right candidate who will be able to help this great pub fulfill its true potential. It has a beautiful beer garden and a great kitchen facility so we are on the hunt for high calibre licensees who, with the backing of Punch, will be able to make a real success of this great pub.
“If any Courier readers are interested in finding out more about the opportunity, they can contact our recruitment team on 0844 848 3279.”
