No more foul patrol for police

EFFORTS by police to stop dog fouling in Cockenzie and Port Seton are a “complete waste of police resources,” according to local councillor Willie Innes.

Mr Innes, who represents Preston, Seton and Gosford, told the burgh’s community council that police had taken to the streets on two occasions – for eight hours at a time – to catch owners who failed to clean up after their pets.

He explained that they were responding to an agreement under CAPP, the community and police partnership, that dog fouling be made a priority as part of efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour.

However, this use of police time had been unproductive because “as soon as there is a visible police presence they (dog owners) stop their dogs from fouling common areas.”

He added: “They just wait until the police are away and they keep on doing it.

“We therefore decided at the last CAPP meeting that a representative of the council should take the matter on as a council priority.

“This is because, although, it may not be a good use of police resources, there has to be a solution.”
