Blitz on cheats
POLICE launched a five-day blitz on bogus workmen and benefit cheats this week, in tandem with officers from the department of work and pensions and trading standards.
The multi-agency team monitored individuals on police and benefits files, working in a variety of industries including construction, roofing, plumbing and window cleaning.
A number of suspected benefit fraudsters were identified. They will either lose their right to collect state benefit or undergo further investigation.
Police revealed that one man, claiming maximum invalidity benefit because of a prosthetic leg, was found to be roofing.
Divisional commander, Chief Superintendent Terry Powell explained that the summer months were often a period when police noticed a rise in bogus workmen activity.
“Over the last few weeks, several such crimes took place across our force area, targeting the elderly and vulnerable in our communities.
“I welcome this kind of hard-hitting partnership where we can target those who prey on the vulnerable, as well as those who commit fraud by cheating the benefit system.”
He added: “By agencies working together and with the support and vigilance of the public, we can target these groups and bring them to book”.
