MORE THAN 400 volunteers donned yellow tabards and wielded litter pickers in a collective spring clean of East Lothian last month.

Six events took place in the county with communities rallying together to tackle one common complaint: litter.

The spring clean campaign was revived last year by ‘Keep Scotland Beautiful’ (KSB) to encourage residents to organise litter clean-up activities.

Chief executive of KSB, John Summers, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the 406 volunteers from East Lothian who organised and attended clean up events making that extra special effort to keep Scotland beautiful.”

In Cockenzie and Port Seton more than 140 residents took to the beaches, walkways and school grounds as part of a mammoth clean-up operation involving Cockenzie Primary School pupils, staff at Seton Sands Holiday Village and volunteers from Cockenzie and Port Seton in Bloom.

Belhaven Church Jam Club held a litter pick-up at Hallhill Healthy Living Centre – Dunbar’s premier sports’ centre.

Members collecting 20 bags of rubbish in just one hour.

And all seven classes from East Linton Primary School braved dreich weather conditions to give the village a good tidy up.

In total, eight large sacks of rubbish were collected from the school grounds and the park, as well as streets in the village.
