HOLY matrimony took on a whole new meaning for Prestonpans minister, the Rev Robert Simpson, when he tied the knot with Susan Sadler, his partner – and parishioner – of two years!

Love blossomed between Robert and Susan when she began attending Prestongrange Parish Church, where Robert has been minister for the past 13 years.

After getting engaged on Christmas Day last year, the couple wasted no time in setting a date for their wedding, which took place at the Kirk Street church, on April 12.

“Well let’s just say that I certainly wasn’t put off,” laughed first-time bride Susan, 56, as she described the first time she laid eyes on her future husband.

In an eco-friendly twist to the special day, divorced father-of-three Robert shunned the traditional limousine, to arrive at the ceremony riding his very own tandem, with best man, and eldest son, Russell, 30, hanging on at the rear!

“I’m a keen cyclist and I’ve had the tandem for a year. But I haven’t really used it,” said Robert, 55.

“I arrived at the church with Russell.

“And we were followed by the ushers in a limo – they didn’t fancy cycling!”

“Russell certainly enjoyed it and he was a fantastic best man – he gave an absolutely brilliant speech at the end of the day as well.”

Susan and Robert were married by Banchory minister and close friend, the Rev Donald Walker, in front of 350 guests, including Robert’s other sons, Adrian, 28, and Andrew, 26, and around 200 members of the congregation.

Said Robert: “The congregation have been hugely supportive from the moment we announced the engagement.

“We were both really happy to be married there.”

In keeping with the fun atmosphere of the day, Leicester-born Susan – who works as a health counsellor in Musselburgh – walked down the aisle to ABBA’s toe-tapping hit ‘Mamma Mia’.

After reciting their vows – which they wrote themselves – and becoming man and wife, the newlyweds (pictured right) enjoyed a reception at the Maitlandfield House Hotel in Haddington, before jetting off to Italy for their honeymoon.

Now, back home in East Loan, Prestonpans, Susan hasn’t ruled out romantic cycling trips for two on Robert’s tandem in the future!
