Still waiting pay out

THE cash-strapped owner of the former Cockenzie House Nursing Home has blamed East Lothian Council for his failure to deliver £76,000 in redundancy payments to his former staff.

One of the 85 staff members, who lost their jobs when the care home closed in March, told the Courier: “We were due to receive our redundancy pay in April.

“But we’re still waiting and people have begun to worry that we’re never going to see this money.”

Owner, Jim McDonald claimed the council was responsible for his inability to pay the money owed.

It had not yet paid him the £150,000 promised for keeping the nursing home open to March 31, while Greenfield Park Care Home in Musselburgh was prepared for residents, he said.

“They paid us for the first two weeks, but haven’t paid since then and have effectively broken that contract.”

A council spokeswoman replied: “The council strongly refutes any such allegations – as the owner Mr McDonald has the full responsibility for payments to his staff and former staff members.”
