‘Exciting time lies ahead’ for Alex
A BUS LOAD of well-wishers from Belhaven Parish Church will journey to Glasgow on Monday to attend the ordination of a local parishioner turned clergyman.
Alex Smeed (pictured left), who led the youth group and religious study section of the church for three years has been appointed associate minister at Whiteinch Church in the west of Glasgow.
The 29-year-old, who performed his first official duties there last Tuesday, returns to the city where his religious career began six years ago.
Alex attended theological college in Glasgow for one year before continuing his studies at Edinburgh University, graduating in July 2006.
He then went on to complete a 15-month probationary placement at Haddington West Church.
Alex moves to Glasgow with his wife Sally, from Melbourne, Australia.
The three year contract with Whiteinch Church is the final straight in his bid to become a qualified minister.
Said Alex: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunities that it gives me.”
The church serves a community of 5,000.
Alex’s neighbour for 20 years and minister at Belhaven Parish Church, Rev Laurence Twaddle, believes he will be a resounding success.
He said: “I think it’s a very exciting time ahead for Alex and Sally.
“They will do a fantastic job.”
