Cricket to stay at park

MUSSELBURGH Cricket Club will retain Lewisvale Park for home matches despite losing their changing facilities to an alleged fire-raising attack in November last year.

Speculation was mounting as to where the reigning division 5 champions would play league games this season after the historic pavilion – used as the club’s dressing rooms – was razed to the ground.

A council demolition team levelled what remained of the building last week.

Both Pinkie playing fields and Loretto High School grounds had been suggested as a temporary substitute.

But following a meeting with council chiefs last week it is hoped that permission will be granted for a 20ft x 9ft container unit to store cricket equipment at the park.

At present, home and visiting teams are struggling to change in a hut, close to the wicket, which is also used for storage.

And to shower they have to go to Musselburgh Sports Centre.

Secretary of the local cricket club, Mark Tucker, said: “This is a temporary arrangement until we can meet with the council and discuss building new dressing rooms.”

But he admitted it could be at least two seasons before a permanent replacement for the pavilion was in place.

Meanwhile, club representatives are to meet with members of Musselburgh Allotment Society and Musselburgh Tennis Club to discuss the potential for a multifaceted facility that could benefit all three groups.
