VOLUNTEERS turned out in force to ensure that Cockenzie and Port Seton is looking its best this summer.

More than 140 local people took part in the burgh’s Monster Spring Clean, as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful initiative.

Seven different groups, together with individual volunteers cleared a large amount of litter from seven different areas, including the Sandy Walk, the West Links, park areas and several stretches of beach.

Those taking part included members of Cockenzie and Port Seton in Bloom, the Parent Teachers Association, the 1st Cockenzie Brownies, the Anchor Boys, members of the gala committee, and staff and holidaymakers at Seton Sands Holiday Village.

In total, almost 150 bags of rubbish were collected, together with a significant number of items too large to put in bags.

At least a dozen tyres and a large amount of rope from fishing boats were pulled from the beach. A carpet and discarded furniture were also collected, as was a shopping trolley found in the woods.

In Bloom spokesperson Sheila Chambers said: “Several bags of dog waste were picked up.

“Although it is good to know that an increasing number of people are cleaning up after their pets, it is disappointing to find that they are throwing the bags away, despite the fact that many bins are sited nearby.

Mrs Chambers said that positive action had come out of the initiative. Staff at Seton Sands Holiday Village had resolved to clean the beach opposite the site once a week.

And pupils at Cockenzie Primary School were already picking up any litter in the school grounds twice a day.
