A STONE in Lochend Woods has been inscribed with a famous quote from John Muir to mark the first anniversary of its community ownership.

Dunbar Community Woodland Group (DCWG) – who manage the woods on behalf of the community – have commissioned stone mason, Gardner Molloy, to carve the inscription: ‘Happy the man to whom every tree is a friend’ on a stone located at the heart of Lochend Woods.

Set at the corner of Kellie Road and Middlemass Road, the two-ton marble stone – supplied by Lafarge, transported by Viridor and positioned by contractors at Asda – has been hailed by DCWG as a “great community effort”.

The group’s convenor, Isobel Knox, said: “We wanted to make a link with the great conservationist.

“The quotation was suggested by Will Collin of Friends of John Muir’s Birthplace, and everyone involved felt that the words were just right”.

Ownership of Lochend Woods was transferred from East Lothian Council to DCWG on April 26, 2007.
