Wild goose chase over doo’cot complaints
REPORTS that vagrants or drunken teenagers were sleeping rough behind Lady Kitty’s Doo’cot led to a wild goose chase, it is claimed.
Community councillors were told a police investigation into complaints of antisocial behaviour descended into farce when an officer unfamiliar with the historic Haddington landmark was despatched from Dalkeith.
Community council treasurer Emily Armatage said: “A woman living close to the doo’cot contacted me to say that youths were creating a lot of noise and the place was attracting a bad crowd. They were congregating and drinking and leaving their bottles behind in that area.”
Tourism officer Effie Renton added: “I telephoned the police at 7pm when I was down there one evening recently. There was a sleeping bag lying and a carrier bag with alcoholic drinks there. Someone had definitely been sleeping rough in the area.
“I got a call at 10.30pm from the police to say they could not get access to the area.”
The officer from Dalkeith Police Station had been trying to reach the doo’cot through the locked grounds of Haddington House instead of the entrance at The Sands, alongside the Tyne.
The situation was noted.
