bid for tourist bus
PLANS for a dedicated tourist bus linking Haddington with the area’s major tourist attractions have stepped up a gear, with the town’s community council making a formal request for the new service to East Lothian Council.
Haddington and District Community Council has written to council leader, Councillor David Berry, requesting the use of one of the authority’s single decker buses for the purpose.
If approved, the tourist bus would operate two days a week. Using Haddington as its base, the bus would travel on loops of the western and eastern halves of the county on alternate days.
Passengers, who would pay a flat rate, would able to hop on and hop off at different tourist attractions, such as Tantallon Castle, Lennoxlove House, The Scottish Seabird Centre, Museum of Flight and Concorde, Preston Collegiate Church and Glenkinchie Distillery, near Pencaitland.
“We believe this is something that would prove very beneficial to the economy, not only here in Haddington but in other county towns,” said community council chair, Jan Wilson.
“There are only limited services linking Haddington with the other main towns in the county, and getting to some of the attractions can be extremely difficult if you don’t have a car.”
Mrs Wilson first raised the idea of a tourist bus at the East Lothian Tourist Forum two years ago and has latterly discussed the possibility with Mr Berry.
