AS THE countdown to Musselburgh Honest Toun’s Association (HTA) Festival Week gets underway, five hopefuls are vying for the prestigious title of this year’s Honest Lad and Lass.

Candidates will introduce themselves to local councillors and HTA committee members at the Wiremill Social Club at Balcarres Road today (Friday), with elections to be held on April 25. Polling stations will be located at the Town Hall, Brunton Hall and St. Ninians Church.

The race for Honest Lad only has two runners, Mark Lambert and Lachlan Thomson – both former prefects at Musselburgh Grammar School.

Mark Lambert (pictured above, back row, right), 20, attended Campie Primary School and became vice-house captain in sixth year at Musselburgh Grammar School.

He is studying at Edinburgh University to become a primary school teacher.

Mark is employed part-time as a waiter at the Glasshouse restaurant and also by East Lothian Out of School Care Network, working at Stoneyhill, Wallyford and Pinkie after-school and holiday clubs.

He has been a member of the Crusaders’ Riding Club for several years.

Lachlan Thomson (also pictured above), 21, attended Telford College, graduating last year with an HND in sports coaching with development but soon returned to Musselburgh to take up a full-time post with East Lothian Council at Musselburgh Sports Centre.

Lachlan was captain of Musselburgh Swimming Club during which time he received the John J. Downie Town Champion Achievement Trophy.

He has been a member of Musselburgh and District Athletics Club since he was seven and, latterly, as a club coach.

Aspiring Honest Lass, Nicola Hunter (front row, left), went to Campie Primary and Musselburgh Grammar where she was a prefect and is currently employed by Campbell & Timmons Dental Practice, as a trainee dental nurse. She attends Telford College working towards an NVQ in dental nursing.

Nicola was a member of Musselburgh Amateur Swimming Club and competed with East Lothian swim team. The 18-year-old assists with Musselburgh ASC, coaching some of the younger swimmers, and was a member of both 7th Musselburgh Brownies and 9th Musselburgh Guides.

Laura McFarlane (front row, right), 18, went to Burgh Primary School, and Musselburgh Grammar School, where she was a prefect and a member of the pupil council.

After finishing school she worked for horse trainer, Celia Henderson, and then took up a post with George Foster, where she rode racehorses. She now works in her father’s car business.

Kimberley Riddoch (front row, middle), 20, went to Campie Primary School and Musselburgh Grammar School and has previously been an attendant at the HTA festival.

Kimberley now runs her own business, ‘The Party Shack’, in Fisherrow. She is a member of Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association, Loretto Youth Players, Mansfield School of Music and the current Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year. She is also a member of the Crusaders’ Riding Club.

The result of the elections will be announced from the steps of the Brunton Hall at 9pm on April 25, followed by the Election Night Dance at 9.30pm.
