AN EXCITING programme of events has been lined up for the diamond jubilee of Cockenzie and Port Seton gala.

Gala committee chairperson, Tracey Bellany, outlined some of the activities planned in the lead-up to the big day on Saturday, May 31.

She said: “There is so much going on and some things have still to be finalised.

“But there are a lot of great activities planned for the run-up to gala day and the civic fortnight, starting with the family quiz tonight (Friday).”

The quiz will take place from 7.30 to 9 pm at Port Seton Community Centre and teams can turn up tonight and take part.

The annual football match between Cockenzie and Port Seton will kick-off a big day of events at King George V Park on Sunday, May 25.

Port Seton captain John Branley and Cockenzie skipper Craig Mair will welcome any players from the villages aged 35 and over who want to take part. They should leave their names and contact details at the Cockenzie branch of the Royal British Legion.

There will also be a bouncy castle and races for the children on the day.

On Friday, May 30 a ‘Welcome Evening’ will be staged for former gala queens, queens’ escorts and committee members of the past 60 years.

The venue is still to be confirmed.

During the civic fortnight, there will also be a display of gala memorabilia in Port Seton Library.

In addition, the gala committee is also hoping to erect 32 street banners in time for the civic fortnight and has written to Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council, East Lothian Council and prominent local businesses for help with the costs.

At present, the committee has funds for four double-side banners or eight single-sided ones.
