STAFF at Haddington’s acclaimed Tynebank Resource Centre for people with learning disabilities have cooked up yet another success.

They have received a national healthy living award in recognition of their commitment to healthy menus and meal choices for service users.

The Scottish Consumer Council and the Scottish Government launched the award scheme in 2006 to make it easier for people to identify healthy food choices in shops, restaurants, canteens and cafes of all sizes in Scotland.

Tynebank’s latest award follows the visit of a dietician to the centre to speak with staff and users about the menu choices that were available.

Staff then devised a menu that offered a variety of fresh and healthy options, reduced hidden ingredients such as salt, fat and sugar, and maintained suitable portion sizes.

The award, which will last for two years, is recognised by a certificate, which has been framed and will hang in Tynebank’s reception area.

As an award holder, Tynebank can use the official healthy living award logo and apple symbol on their menus to signpost healthy options.

Centre manager Caitriona Houston believes that the benefits for customers extend beyond the food on offer to them. She said: “All of our service users have been learning more about healthy diets and how to make the best choices for them.

“Using the apple logo on our menu is especially useful as we work with signs and symbols all of the time.

“It’s helped to simplify the information and make it accessible to everyone who visits the centre.

“ I am extremely proud of everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen.”

East Lothian Council’s cabinet member for adult social care services, Councillor Ruth Currie, said: “This is great news for staff and service users at Tynebank.

“A lot of hard work has gone in to meeting the healthy living standards.

“The enthusiasm and commitment that has been shown to achieving the award is admirable.”
