Margaret and Sandy celebrate 40 years of marriage

THEIR first dance together may have been to The Clyde Valley Stompers, but when Margaret Thomson first met husband Sandy, it was his lightness on his feet that impressed her.

“He was a really good dancer and that’s what caught me eye,” she said.

“We met at the Corn Exchange in Haddington. It was the place to go then.”

Sandy and Margaret, of Whin Park in Cockenzie, were together for four years before marrying at Tranent Old Parish Church in 1958.

“The church is a special place for us, as our four children – Alexander, Pearl, Henry and Gillian – were christened there,” she added.

The couple, both 69, celebrated their golden wedding at the Brig Inn in Tranent, where more than 100 family and friends joined them.

There are now four generations of the Thomsons, for as well as their children, Sandy and Margaret have seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

“And there’s another great-granchild on the way, anytime soon,” Margaret said.

Margaret lived in Tranent before she was married and the couple have lived in Sandy’s home village of Cockenzie ever since.

Before he retired, Sandy spent most of his working life as a coal miner.

“I worked at Preston Links, Dalkeith, the Ramsay in Loanhead, before I finished up at Monktonhall,” he said.

Margaret worked at the cotton mill in Musselburgh, which is now the town’s Jobcentre, before giving up work to look after her children.

She believes that the secret to a good marriage is “never going to bed without settling an argument”.

“It is also good if you have other interests – Sandy, for instance, loves his fishing,” she added.

“Sandy used to own a fishing boat, but now goes out on one, owned by his friend Brian, called Catch 22.”

When asked if Margaret has been his best catch, Sandy replied: “Aye, definitely.”
